Festival of football planned for Glasgow children
This year the Glasgow based Tir Conaill Harps GAC embarked on a highly ambitious five year development plan. Central to this was the aim of involving more children in healthy lifestyles and sports participation. The club’s Management Committee set up Mini harps and after school clubs aimed at 5 to 8 year olds in various socially deprived parts of the city. The aim was to get them actively involved in play and to start a long term healthy lifestyles approach to their diet by encouraging them to eat fruit and drink water at each training session. Parents also got involved in the training and they were encouraged by the club’s community coaches not to buy them sweets and crisps after the each session. The club’s target of having 100 under 8s involved in a project by this summer looks set-to be exceeded.
Eighty six children participated in an indoor coaching day last month and in excess of 100 children are expected to attend a festival of football at the Cartha Rugby club, on Saturday 16th June, at 12 noon.
The club are ploughing a lot of resources and time into this project including putting on buses from five inner city areas of Glasgow . It is a massive undertaking which the club hope they will reap the benefits from in the years ahead through increased numbers of participants and more parental involvement in the club.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS
St.Mungo’s Primary School,
Parson.St, Townhead,
Wednesday, from 6.30-7.30pm
Tir Conaill Harps gaelic athletic club is now extending it’s healthy lifestyles club piloted in the south side of Glasgow for 5 to 8 year olds to the Townhead area.
The club is open to boys and girls aged between five and eight. They will be given a basic introduction into gaelic football and healthy lifestyles. Participants will be provided with fresh fruit and a sugar free drink at every session. Coaching will be provided by qualified coaches who have been Disclosure Scotland checked. Parents and guardians are more than welcome to attend the sessions with their children and we encourage you to join in should you wish. The objective is very much aimed at children having fun and learning new skills in a safe environment.
However, the club does appeal to parents to support the healthy living aspect of the club by ensuring their children don’t bring soft drinks, sweets and crisps to sessions. To help defray some of the costs and to ensure the continuation of the club we are asking children to pay £1 per session.
Tir Conaill Harps also run a mini harps club in St.Patrick’s school, Perth st, Anderston, which runs on a Tuesday night from 6 to 7pm. The south side club is run every Saturday at the Holyrood Sports centre, Aikenhead.Rd , at 1pm for under 5s and 1.30pm for under 8s. All welcome.
